Bioremediation
Selective microorganisms for environmental remediation
Bioremediation is an environmental decontamination technology based on the microbial metabolism of certain harmless microorganisms, selected for their ability to biodegrade or detoxify pollutants. It is carried out with the help of effective and versatile technologies applicable to the most widespread environmental contaminations (soil, air, sludge) and represents a sustainable and effective approach in the degradation of the most common pollutants, including hydrocarbons and heavy metals
It is also a versatile technology, suitable for different environmental contexts with a positive impact in terms of sustainability compared to traditional chemical and mechanical remediation methods.
Some of the most common applications for bioremediation include:
- Soil decontamination: This technology is particularly effective for the treatment of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons from oil accidents or industrial spills.
- Remediation of river beds: Microorganisms degrade pollutants in river waters, restoring the natural ecosystem.
- Remediation of lagoons and sludge: Bioremediation is used to reduce contamination in lagoon sediments and sludges, ensuring the improvement of environmental quality of these ecosystems.
BBA Ecotech proposes several innovative solutions for this application.
MasterBioFuel: for hydrocarbons degradation
MasterBioFuel is a formulation able to activate the biomass present in the soil and that, thanks to specific bacterial strains such as Bacillus and Pseudomonas and others, completely degrades mineral oils, solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic compounds derived from crude oil accumulated in the environment.
MasterBioFuel is proven to be effective for the decontamination of soils, sludges, sands, riverbeds and marine environments.
BCP PST Remove: for the degradation of residual pesticides in soil
BCP PST Remove is a rich consortium of selective microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and algae, which use pesticides as a source of carbon, energy or nutrients. The biodegradable mechanism applied by BCP PST Remove can happen through:
- Mineralization: the pesticide molecule is completely broken down into inorganic compounds (CO₂, H₂O, mineral salts).
- Cometabolism: the molecule is transformed by microorganisms into intermediate products and further degraded into simple, stable compounds depending on the nature of the pesticide, its residue in the soil and the type of soil and environmental conditions (pH, Temperature, R.U.).
BCP NC Bioremediation: for the degradation of nitrocellulose (nitrate derivatives of cellulose)
Nitrocellulose is a thermoplastic chemical compound, derived from cellulose, in which the hydroxyl (-OH) groups are replaced by nitro (-NO₂). It is used industrially for the production of plastics, paints and lacquers. In the past, it was used in explosives.
Once dispersed in the environment, nitrocellulose is highly polluting and dangerous due to its flammability and combustion rate.
BBA Ecotech’s R&D area has succeeded in turning a danger into a resource thanks to BCP NC Bioremediation, a special mixture of microorganisms, including sulphate-reducers, basidiomycete fungi and other highly specific microorganisms, studied and designed according to the preferred metabolic pathways for this substrate.
